Location: Burton, Midlands
Sector: Healthcare
Key services: Relocation, project management, furniture & equipment handling
Gordon Street Surgery appointed Business Moves Group (BMG) to deliver a multi-phase relocation of its services from Queens Hospital and Hill Street Locations to a new standalone site on Gordon Street, Burton. This critical project involved the movement of clinical and commercial assets across two operational NHS facilities, with strict timelines and zero room for disruption to services.
BMG was tasked with completing the removal, transportation and positioning of sensitive medical equipment, office infrastructure, and patient-facing furniture within the new premises – all while complying with healthcare-specific health and safety standards.
The project began with a comprehensive pre-move site survey to determine the scope of work. BMG assessed the volume and nature of items to be relocated, including medical equipment, and mapped logistical challenges such as stair access, corridor widths, and parking limitations. This process allowed the team to determine crate requirements, plan vehicle access, and identify any items requiring special handling. A detailed inventory of assets was created to support item tracking and placement, ensuring accountability and precise delivery throughout.
In line with NHS standards and client expectations, BMG produced a phased relocation schedule to minimise disruption and maintain operational continuity. The plan outlined a full sequence of activities, from pre-move delivery of packing crates to transportation, placement, and post-move support.
To prepare for the move, BMG delivered 68 LC3 packing crates to the surgery. These were used for both clinical and administrative items. All items were clearly labelled according to destination zones at the new surgery, ensuring efficient unpacking and placement upon arrival.
On 20th March, the BMG team began the first phase of the relocation. This involved the disassembly and removal of desks, operator chairs, IT-related peripherals, and personal storage from Queens Hospital. In parallel, they relocated specialist equipment from Hill Street, including medical sofas, fridges, privacy screens, examination lights, and sharps bins. These items required special handling using reinforced crates, protective wrapping, and lifting aids to ensure their integrity during transport.
All furniture and equipment was transported using BMG’s secure, GPS-tracked vehicles, which are equipped with padded interiors and air-ride suspension to safeguard fragile loads. Upon arrival at Gordon Street, items were unloaded, reassembled where required, and placed according to the client’s floor plan and departmental layout.
The move was conducted across two main relocation days and concluded with the collection of empty crates by 28th March. The final phase included the transfer of hospital beds, medical fridges, clinical waste bins, and cabinets – all installed with precision in their designated spaces. Throughout the process, BMG followed strict health and safety protocols for lifting, carrying, and handling to protect both staff and assets.
All packing waste and protective materials were removed from the site and disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations. Items no longer required were recycled or prepared for reuse in line with NHS sustainability principles.
Although emergency relocation services were not required on this occasion, BMG maintained contingency resources throughout the project to ensure rapid response capability in case of delays, access restrictions, or unforeseen clinical needs.
BMG’s secure warehouse network is available to store items, including medical equipment, archived files, or surplus furniture, as and when required by the client. This option can be deployed during future refurbishment or expansion phases.
This project demonstrates BMG’s full-service relocation capability, combining equipment handling, commercial relocation expertise, and compliant project execution in a live healthcare environment. With careful planning, secure transport, and zero operational downtime, BMG enabled Gordon Street Surgery to open on time – fully operational and ready to serve the community.
“BMG handled our short-notice enquiry swiftly and professionally, ensuring we were prioritised and our niche requirements understood and met. The expert planning meant that all stages of packing and moving went very smoothly, and the logistics team on the day went above and beyond to meet the unexpected demands of the move. They understood the nature of our work in the NHS, including the pressures of minimising impact on patient-facing services, appropriately handling medical equipment and working with multiple managers to coordinate a quick install at the new site. I heartily recommend them to other NHS providers.” – Matthew Edwards, Business Operations Manager at Gordon Street Surgery
