Alternatives to landfill

Our core objective is to support the lifecycle of redundant or surplus office furniture and avoid sending it to landfill. We do this in two ways:

  • Provide a second life through closed-loop solutions – donating to community projects, re-distributing to schools via the Business 2 Schools initiative, and charities, resale, or remodelling. We have long-term relationships with charities, schools, and community partners across the UK to ensure reuse of redundant furniture within local communities.
  • Recovering as much of the material as possible, to recycle and convert materials to support the manufacture of other products and to support the production of energy.

These options maximise the environmental, social, and commercial benefits, while ensuring landfill disposal is minimised.

Expert partners

We work with industry-leading partners across the UK to achieve our sustainability goals. We identify and partner with companies that provide a range of solutions to prevent office furniture from going to landfill, including refurbishment, recycling, and upcycling.

In the case of our recycling partners, we look for companies that break down every item into individual parts. Those parts – plastic, rubber, metal – can then be sent to companies that use them in the manufacturing of new products. We then provide our clients with detailed reports, so they know exactly what happened to each item and the environmental benefits that have come from avoiding landfill.

As well as working with local partners in our key markets, we work with a global waste management company to utilise its recycling and resource recovery options. Every part of an unwanted office item can be reused, from wood becoming animal bedding to plastic being processed into compounds that have a variety of uses.

Contributing to the circular economy is a key objective for Business Moves Group. In 2023, we won Enva's 'Reuse' category in its Love Recycling Awards for our success in reuse and redistribution of furniture and other equipment across commercial and charity partners.
