Legal and General was established in 1836 and is a leading financial services group and major global investor, working to safeguard people’s financial futures around the world.

The company has key UK offices in London, Cardiff, Hove, Solihull and Barnsley. This case study details how Business Moves Group supported Legal & General with an office refurbishment project at its London office at One Coleman Street.

Office refurbishment

We have been supporting Legal & General for 18 months, so the firm came straight to BMG when it needed support with an office refurbishment. The whole of the eight-storey building was being refurbished; Legal & General needed support with furniture management and setting up a phased approach so that work could take place without causing major disruption to building occupants.

Phased approach

Stu Thorley visited the site in October 2022 to carry out a survey of the second floor. This included asset lists with photographs and enabled the team to put plans in place for the first phase of the move. This took place a month later over an eight-day period.

Stu and Keith Tiltman returned in January 2023 to carry out a second survey. This formed the basis for the second phase of the move from people on the 3rd and 4th floors and was carried out over five days in April.

Sustainable furniture management

As with every project that we work on, our goal is to avoid landfill. In fact, we aim to avoid recycling as much as possible and contribute to the circular economy through other methods such as reusing, selling, storing and donating furniture. Any items that we do recycle are done so ethically with partners that provide a detailed report on the lifecycle of all recycled materials.

2nd floor:

  • 148 office chairs were upcycled for reuse, 62 were repurposed and 29 were donated.
  • 14 banks of desks were reused or sold, 100 desk positions were stored for future reuse, and three meeting tables were donated.
  • 78 cabinets of varying size were donated.
  • 30 sets of lockers were donated.
  • Two booths were sold and six were donated.
  • Two fridges were donated.
  • 76 cockpit desking items were ethically recycled.

The reuse of items along resulted in a carbon saving of more than 18,000kgO2e. The monetary value of storing and reusing items was £22,000, sold items generated £5,000 and donated items were worth £4,500.

3rd floor:

  • 96 chairs were donated.
  • 152 pedestals were either sold, donated or ethically recycled.
  • All soft furnishings were donated.
  • All cabinets were ethically recycled.

The carbon saving from the third floor project was 11928kgCo2e.

Corporate social responsibility

The value of donating items comes from supporting charities that have a need for unwanted furniture. Donated items from this project went to NHS Sussex and Business2Schools, a charity that supports state schools by resourcing furniture from businesses.

Client feedback

“I would like to express my gratitude to Jason and his team for the excellent work they have done on the 3rd floor, 4th floor and the car park. I really enjoyed working with Jason and I can’t stop singing his praises as this was an enjoyable experience and the work was performed to a very high standard. Thank you again, this was a really impressive piece of work!”
