Financial equipment presents unique logistics challenges. ATMs, safes, cash handling machines and security cabinets are high-value, heavy and operationally critical. Moving them requires vetted personnel, specialist handling equipment, secure transport and careful coordination to maintain both security and business continuity.

What makes financial equipment relocation high risk

Financial equipment is a target. ATMs contain cash, safes protect valuables, and even decommissioned units may hold residual data or components with resale value. Security must be maintained throughout the chain of custody, from disconnection to final positioning or disposal.

The physical characteristics add complexity. ATMs typically weigh between 500 kilograms and 1.2 tonnes; safes and vaults can be heavier still. Moving this equipment requires specialist lifting gear, vehicles rated for heavy loads, and personnel trained in manual handling techniques.

Access can be tricky as bank branches and retail locations are often in older buildings with narrow doorways, limited loading areas and floors that may require structural assessment before heavy equipment can be positioned. A Victorian high street premises presents different challenges to a modern shopping centre unit.

Operational continuity matters - a branch without a functioning ATM loses footfall and customer convenience. Downtime must be minimised, which typically means working outside business hours and completing installations efficiently.

Security protocols for high-value assets

Security for financial equipment moves begins with personnel. All BMG crew members are DBS-checked and vetted before working on financial sector projects. Teams typically comprise three to four individuals, each holding relevant qualifications including CSCS cards, manual handling certification and pump truck operation certificates.

The vehicles we use for ATM and safe transport are GPS-tracked throughout transit, providing real-time visibility of location and movement. This supports both operational coordination and security monitoring.

Documentation and sign-off procedures maintain chain of custody. A tablet-based system captures surveys, condition records and sign-offs at each stage of the process, creating an auditable trail from collection to final installation.

Most ATM and safe moves take place outside business hours, limiting the window during which equipment is in transit and reducing visibility to potential threats. Early morning, evening and weekend slots are standard for this type of work.

Transporting and installing ATMs

ATM projects begin with a site survey. The survey confirms that the unit will fit in the designated location, assesses access routes, and includes a structural check to ensure floor strength and stability can support the equipment weight. For older buildings, this assessment is essential before any work proceeds.

Specialist equipment enables safe handling of units weighing up to 1.2 tonnes. Hand pallet trucks, high risers, roller bars and wooden block barrows allow crews to manoeuvre ATMs through constrained spaces and position them precisely. Five points of personal protective equipment are standard for all crew members.

Transport uses vehicles appropriate for heavy, high-value loads. Air-ride suspension minimises vibration during transit, protecting sensitive components.

Installation includes positioning and anchoring the unit in its designated location. Network connection and commissioning are completed by the client's technical teams or ATM service engineers, who bring the unit online and configure it for operation.

Decommissioning and replacement projects

Decommissioning projects require the same security protocols as installations. BMG handles the physical removal of ATMs, safes and other financial equipment, disconnecting units from their fixtures and transporting them securely to storage or disposal facilities.

Where units are being replaced, coordination between removal and installation can minimise branch downtime. Removing the old unit and positioning the new one in a single visit reduces the window during which the branch operates without an ATM.

Decommissioned equipment may contain residual data or components requiring secure handling. While data destruction is typically the client's responsibility, logistics arrangements support chain of custody requirements throughout the process, with documentation confirming handover at each stage.

Storage and staging of financial hardware

Secure storage supports both operational flexibility and project logistics. Units awaiting installation can be held at secure facilities until branch fit-outs are complete. Decommissioned equipment can be consolidated pending disposal decisions.

Storage facilities offer controlled access, real-time inventory tracking and appropriate security measures for high-value equipment. Staging areas allow units to be prepared, inspected and documented before delivery to site.

For large-scale rollout or replacement programmes, storage enables phased delivery aligned to branch readiness. Rather than coordinating simultaneous deliveries to dozens of locations, equipment can be called off from storage as each site becomes ready to receive it.

Minimising disruption to branch operations

Coordination with branch managers ensures that site access, alarm codes and any location-specific requirements are confirmed before the crew arrives. For multi-site rollouts, a single point of contact simplifies communication and keeps the programme on track.

Post-installation sign-off confirms that equipment has been positioned correctly and is ready for commissioning by technical teams. Any snags are documented and addressed before the crew leaves site.
